Visit Philippines Year – Davao Roadshow
The Department of Tourism (DoT) formally announced 2015 to be the Visit the Philippines Year on Sept. 4 during the launch of its campaign at the SMX Convention Center of SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City, coinciding with the Philippine Travel Exchange (Phitex), intensifying DoT’s tourism campaign and slogan “It’s More Fun in the Philippines.”
Regional launches are scheduled in October with the Davao City leg slated on October 8, 2014. The regional launch will not only inform the tourism players of Davao on Visit Philippines Year 2015 but more importantly will also make them part of the program through the Visit Davao campaign banner events which are Davao Region’s entry to the Visit Philippines Year calendar of events. These are the VISIT DAVAO FUN SALE which will run from April 3-May 15, 2015; the 7th International Boulder Face Challenge on April 25-26, 2015 and the Visit Samal Islands 2015 from March to May.
The events staged for the 2015 summer period will propel Davao as the summer destination in the south especially that the region’s tagline is “From Islands to Highlands.” This will support the image of sun and beach, culture, adventure and nature of the region.
Visit Philippines Year will bring in the international tourists to the country and expand the product choices to include the south Philippines especially Davao. This will help position Davao’s tourist attractions and improve the image of the region.
To create more ground support for VPY, the stakeholders must be involved. The following banner events shall be Davao’s entries to VPY Calendar of Events:
1. Visit Davao Fun Sale is a marketing campaign hinged on the sale of tours in tourist attractions of the region specially in Davao. Tthe tour operators created a consortium to operate fun tours at very low low prices to be competitive in the market. The accommodation facilities and attractions also created special packages to entice the tourists. These fun packages will be in full operation from April 3-May 15. However, the campaign is not limited to tours but will also mean fun sale amongst restaurants and malls to add to the excitement of the tourist. There will be special promos, sales and major events happening in malls during the week-ends of summer.
2. Visit Samal Islands is the program adopted by the Samal City Resort Owners Association and Island Garden City Tourism Council which is about big discounts, special promos and packages in the beach resorts and inland attractions as well as the staging of major events in the islands of Samal and Talicud during the summer period.
3. 7th International Boulder Face Challenge is the extreme race involving four disciplines in the race to reach the peak of Mt. Apo within 24 hours. The 3-member team are international and local competitors. Winners take pride in braving through the tough terrain and four disciplines of mountain climbing, biking, water tubing and running. Already earning an international mark in extreme sports, this race is the opening event of the summer sports fest of Davao City.
For the VPY to be sustainable, the calendar of events for the year must be filled up with exciting and enticing events to lure in the international market. From the words of the honorable Secretary, ”What will truly sustain Visit the Philippines Year 2015 campaign are the people themselves. I enjoin the businesses, communities and locals, to play an active part in spreading and amplifying our messages, enticing would-be visitors to come visit our shores,” said Jimenez.
For this reason, the Davao VPY launch will include a MOA signing and the formal introduction of the Visit Davao campaigns for VPY 2015 enumerated above.
The provincial and city tourism offices came up with other major events for VPY 2015:
a. Palarong Pambansa hosting of Davao del Norte
b. Raflessia Watch of Maragusan, Compostela Valley
c. Mt. Hamiguitan Natural Park opening in June 2015
d. Dahican Summer Frolic of Mati, Davao Oriental in April
The regional launch will signal the beginning of more exciting events for 2015.
